Blessing of the Animals 2007
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS,
A TIME TO COUNT OUR BLESSINGS AND OFFER APPRECIATION
FOR ANIMALS WHO
PROVIDE WORK, LOVE AND COMPANIONSHIP.

The FRMS organized and hosted
their annual Blessing of the Animals on Friday, December 14, around the
historic Morgan Fountain in Shockoe Slip in downtown Richmond.

The
event was founded to recognize working animals and the role they play
in our lives, the Richmond Mounted Police horses being some of the most
visible and valuable animals in our community fulfilling this role. A
number of therapy dogs and lots of pets were on hand to share in this
special seasonal gathering.

The fountain is an appropriate landmark as
it was originally constructed as a watering fountain for the working
horses that pulled cargo wagons in Richmond’s business district near
the river.

Each of the police horses and
mounted officers were introduced.

Reverend Karen Lacy, breeder of champion border collies, offered a
moving and meaningful blessing.

Singer-songwriter Susan Greenbaum
performed a number of songs and people and pets took advantage of the
fair weather to enjoy each other’s company.

Participants were encouraged to
donate pet food which was delivered to
AARF, the Animal Adoption & Rescue Foundation, a local animal
welfare and safehousing organization.

This event is currently
scheduled annually at 12 noon on the second
Friday in December.

It has taken place every year since 1992. The
program is intentionally brief (about 30 minutes) so people can
participate during their lunch hour and local businesses are encouraged
to make it a “pet-friendly” day at the office.

Following the blessing, FRMS
board members served the mounted officers
a special holiday lunch upon their return to the police
stables.

Plan to join us next year!!!
